Before Chaitra Fine Jewels had a name, it had a memory.
A gold stud earring that belongs to my mother. Nothing fancy, just a small, round dot of gold she’s worn almost every day for as long as I can remember. To busy mornings and temple visits. To parent-teacher meetings and hospital waiting rooms. Through decades of everyday life.
She has other jewellery, of course. The heavy necklace set from her wedding. Jhumkas that come out during festivals. A diamond ring my father gave her on their 25th anniversary that lives in a locker because “it’s too precious to wear.”
I always found that strange. Jewellery too precious to wear. Isn’t wearing it the whole point?
A Ring After Her First Job
My sister saved for eight months after her first salary to buy herself a ring. Not an expensive one, just something that felt like hers. Something that said: I did it. I’m here. I earned this.
